The evolution and growth of the mobile market is all too apparent in a recent article by PCMag. According to the report, Apple and Android operating systems now make up more than 90% of the smartphone market.
Android is the smartphone king in terms of shipments. As reported by Vision Mobile in an article and in the infographic below, 1 in 2 smartphones sold in 2011 was an Android device. But while Android devices are most numerous, Apple is the winner when it comes to profits and revenues. Thanks to the buzz around the fall 2011 release of the iPhone 4S, Apple sold 37 million iPhones in the fourth quarter and collected a record-breaking $32 billion profit.
All in all, smartphone sales as a whole continue to grow more and more rapidly. Indeed, according to a recent report from Pew Research, the number of Americans who are smartphone owners now stands at 46% & outnumber the 41% of adults who own a “dumbphone.”
What do you think? Will Android remain king? Will Apple ever overtake shipments? When was the last time you owned a “dumbphone”? Which is your favorite smartphone operating system? Check out the trends reported in Vision Mobile’s infographic below and tell us!
